Left-Brain

I’m not a flowery wordsmith. Not even a little bit.

But for whatever reason, God has my nose poked into the Psalms for my personal study. I have resisted systematically studying the Psalms over the years because, honestly, it is not my style of writing. I am a bit too left-brained for my own good.

But of course, God is teaching me about the beauty of His Word and intimacy of relationship with Him by studying the flowery words of the Psalms.

And I confess…

IMG_6253Psalm 29 has this unpoetic girl kinda choked up tonight. This beautifully penned Psalm is challenging my spirit and motives of worship. Go read it!

Ascribe…not once, not twice, but three times. Ascribe what? Glory to our God.

I mean, what else could we possibly bring God other than our out right confession of His God-ness. We get this so backwards in our personality-driven world. We ascribe glory to teachers, preachers, or leaders when our all should be laid squarely at His feet.

In Old Testament times, there was much liturgy and ceremonial “doings” in worship to show Him honor (holy array in Psalm 29:1). But now, because of Christ, our holy array is inward purity and outward holiness.

and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Ephesians 4:24

His voice is described…

Powerful and majestic. His voice, like the most intense, atmosphere-cracking thunder you have ever heard, is able to break the strongest cedars of Lebanon, ignites fires, makes deer to calve prematurely, and rolls upon the waters.

This is our God. Jehovah. The Great I Am. What should be our approach to our LORD?

David approached him with an all out, face down, can’t-worship-you-enough attitude. I am comparing my approach to Him which can be at times…ungrateful, rushed, can’t-be-bothered-to-worship-now attitude.

I know – that attitude stinks. God, help me to have a heart more like David. I mean he was the anointed, chosen king of Israel. If he could ascribe glory x 3 to You, little ole me should do the same.

So why does God have my nose-poked in the Psalms? Probably to prove to me that studying scripture is not just a left-brained activity. The beauty of David’s God-inspired words can activate my much less used right-brain.

“And in His temple, everything says, Glory!” Psalm 29:9
