…and Jesus in Between

There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. John 19:18

Jesus in betweenJust when you think you could not possibly learn even one more little thing about a scripture passage, the Holy Spirit shines a spotlight on one word or phrase.

I have read John 19 many times over the years in preparing for Easter lessons or general study…but “Jesus in between” is standing out like a neon light!

“Jesus in between” in this passage is very literal. Jesus was indeed crucified between two thieves. Jesus’ position on the cross that day made an eternal difference for one of the men who was next to him who asked for forgiveness.

But my head is reeling with all the other meanings it has.

Jesus is in between me and my sin – praise God. “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.”

Jesus is in between me and the Law – the law none of us could perfectly keep…”by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances…” Ephesians 2:15.

Jesus is in between me and God…not to separate us, but so He can intercede for me…”Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.” Romans 8:34.

Jesus is in between me and Satan…“The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8b

Jesus is in between me and hell…“And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” This sounds so harsh to some, but it is truly just when you study the whole Word of God.

Jesus is in between in a thousand more ways each and every day. There is no telling the danger, the pain, and the heartache I have been spared because Jesus intervened unbeknownst to me.

I want Jesus smack dab in the middle of all my business.

Put Jesus in the middle of your life, not just to avoid hell, but so you can live the abundant life He promised to us (John 10:10).

  1. Shelly,
Love this! I, too, had never thought about this concept and all the meanings it can have for believers! Thank you!
