Corn, Corn, Corn, COW!

A couple of years ago, our family loaded up the SUV and struck out on a great American West Vacation. Our destination – Yellowstone! Once we got past the Mississippi River, the scenery notably changed. We went from lush green, hilly woods covered in kudzoo to flat plains coverd with corn stalks. This is how my son Caleb described it as we zoomed down the interstate: corn, corn, corn, corn, corn, COW! That was truly about the extent of the scenery through the bread basket of America.

As I anticipate a return to the bread basket, specifically Chadron, NE, the sight of corn ready to be harvested brings to mind the words of Christ: Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest (Jn. 4:35). This is my first official “mission” trip and I am wildly excited. I know that God has prepared hearts through His spirit and through the work of other teams that have been there before us. In addition to sowing more seeds, we may very well reap the harvest of other workers. We will be hosting a VBS for kids in the community and having “Parties in the Park” where the gospel will be shared through drama and puppets.

Here is what I am being convicted of tonight. I am going to Chadron for the express purpose of reaping a harvest. I am willing to be a worker there to work the “fields” of people who need to know Christ. Why doesn’t that willingness exist so readily right here in Florence, AL? Is there not a crop here that needs to be reaped? I pray that my heart will be so changed by this experience in Chadron that I will see fields all around that need to be worked. Christ prayed in Matthew 9 for laborers for the harvest. The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

So as we strike out to Chadron, I pray that Christ will make me a qualified worker and will honor our team’s commissioning on this trip. I further pray that this spirit of being a willing laborer for Him will continue right here in my own neighborhood. I will keep you posted this week of how things progress in Chadron and I cannot wait to see what God has in store!
