Lesson 10, Part I…Nothing But the Blood!

By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:10

Oh my, it is time to put on our “big girl” panties and deal with some serious issues in this lesson. The writer of Hebrews is pulling out all the stops on the issue of Old Testament sacrifices, our justification, and the new covenant of Jesus.

Here are some things to do in your study of Hebrews 10:

  • Keep on marking your key words! Is doing this helping you in anyway? Please share!
  • The Law and the Old Testament sacrificial system is only a shadow or a pattern of what Jesus would do for us. Look at verse 3-4…what is the problem of the animal sacrifices? Do you want a yearly reminder of your past sins?
  • Verses 5-10 are referring to Christ’s offering. How do these verses relate back to John 17:4 and Matthew 26:39?
  • Verses 11-14 are emphasizing ONE offering…why do you think Christ “sat down” after having been offered?
  • Verses 15-18 are totally precious to me! Where will the new covenant be written? Compare this to the Law which was written on stone tablets! Can I get a hallelujah to “I will remember no more”?
  • What does verse 18 make abundantly clear to us?
  • Verses 19-22…Why is it a BIG DEAL that we can now enter the holy place?
Read Leviticus 16:23-34 for a deeper understanding of the day of Atonement.
  • According to verse 19, how do we gain access to the holy place?

Aren’t you just thrilled that we do not have to go through human priests to gain access to God…we can come boldy into His presence because of Jesus’ blood. Aaron or any other high priest didn’t dare enter the holy place without a blood sacrifice. Jesus was the perfect blood sacrifice that atoned for our sin and He entered the Holy Place for us. The day He died was the final day of atonement.

“How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?” Hebrews 10:29
