Hebrews 4…Rest in His Promise

FROM FEAR TO CONFIDENCE

Hebrews 4:16

Hey friends! How are you doing in our journey into Hebrews? Are you still hanging in there? Remember all of the encouragement in Hebrews 3 to keep firm to the end…that is my advice as you study God’s Word. You do not have to complete a chapter per day…just keep yourself on a committed schedule to do a few suggested homework tasks each day with our study. Before you know it, instead of saying “I have to study the Bible” you will be saying “I can’t wait to study the Bible!

Here are a few things you can do to study Hebrews 4:

  • Continue marking your key words. Here are chapters 4-6 if you want to print them.
  • Add the word “rest” to your list of key words. It is mentioned numerous times in Hebrews 4. Mark it with a symbol you create. Make a list of what you learn about rest in this chapter.
  • Verse 1 begins with a warning…what is it?
  • According to verse 2, what happens when faith and hearing are not united or mixed?
  • If you have time, read Numbers 14 as background. Pay close attention to Numbers 14:11. How does it connect to Hebrews 4?
  • To what is the Word of God compared in verse 12?
  • Begin a list of things you learn about Jesus as our High Priest. Make sure you include things you have already read in Hebrews 2:17-18 as well as Hebrews 4:14-16.
  • Compare Hebrews 4:1 and 4:16. How would you describe the difference in tone from the beginning to the end of this chapter? Think about why/how we can go from fear to confidence.

YOU ARE DOING GREAT! HANG IN THERE WITH ME FRIENDS! WE HAVE SOME MIND-BLOWING DISCOVERIES TO MAKE TOGETHER OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS!

  1. I wanted to elaborate on the difference in verses 1 & 16. I feel like verse 1 gives us a warning about what will happen if we do not have a fear or reverence if we come short of the promise of entering into his rest. It is a warning, no doubt. We are to abide in His promises. Verse 16 is an invitation for us. We can not only come, but come as the Bible puts it, come BOLDLY, to the throne of grace to obtain mercy in our time of need. God wants us to come to Him anytime we need Him, verse 16. But He also wants our obedience and reverence, hence verse 1.

  2. This chapter seems to emphasize that we can go from fear to confidence to God through the study of his word….seems to emphasize our relationship to God is through the study of His word.
